“…All of Julia & Tony’s recommendations on where to go & places to see, were perfect for us, we ate like kings & enjoyed the whole experience.…”

While unspoilt Herefordshire is one of the most rural counties in England, it has a vegan offering which extends well beyond the fruit & potatoes for which it is known. From oak-framed hillside pubs with roasts to trendy in-town Pizzerias, there is something for every vegan palette. We only list eateries which we have eaten in personally & visit often, so you can feel safe with our recommendations. Many of these places are highly popular so we suggest reservations are made & will be very happy to make them on your behalf.

The Blue Boar, Ludlow (11 miles / 25 minutes)…

A welcoming retreat in the heart of Ludlow, The Blue Boar is an authentically and sensitively restored Grade II listed pub on Mill Street, just moments from the Castle, Market Square, and theatre. Built in the 17th Century, every corner tells the story of the pub, and Ludlow’s, Medieval history, from metal artwork depicting scenes from the Market Square, to an original colour blue paint from 1650 for the signage; it all comes together to marry the warmth and identity of the Blue Boar.

Plenty of excellent vegan options.

The Cider Barn at Dunkertons Cider Mill (5.9 miles / 13 minutes)…

The Cider Barn is a 450 year old, Grade II listed barn at Dunkertons Cider Mill, Just outside the village of Pembridge in North Herefordshire.

They are passionate about celebrating Herefordshire’s fantastic produce in their food, drink and everything they prepare. It’s one of our favourites, with a dedicated 3 course vegan menu featuring elaborate and highly creative food, in a beautiful setting – an especially lovely place to have a summer lunch on the wonderful terrace.

The Riverside at Aymestrey (3.3 miles / 6 minutes)…

Set amidst the tranquil Herefordshire countryside, nestled on the southern edge of the Mortimer Forest & within easy reach of Stoneleigh, The award-winning Riverside offers an authentic & atmospheric restaurant, housed in a historic 16th-century black & white building, enveloped by the natural beauty of the River Lugg valley. A gorgeous setting for drinks by the River in summer or sitting by one of the cosy stoves in winter.

The Angel, Kingsland (next door / 30 second walk)…

Our neighbour The Angel is a delightful family run black and white country pub. Probably the original hostelry in the village (there were four at one time) and set in a fabulous location. Serving a high level of pub style food & great for a drink with a selection of excellent wines, local real ales & ciders all available with views overlooking the village green & church.

You will always get a warm welcome & vegan options include risotto & beetroot wellington.

The Corners Inn, Kingsland (0.5 miles / 8 minute walk)…

Take a short walk through the village & you’ll find the black & white Corners Inn, a traditional country pub & restaurant. Offering a wide selection of locally produced food and drink seven days a week.

The Corners does a great falafel burger with lettuce, tomato & gherkin, relish & chips, & a sweet potato & chickpea masala with pilaf rice, ginger chutney& naan bread.

Ask for a table in one of the gorgeous bay windows.

Sourced, Ludlow (11 miles / 25 minutes)…

Back in the day four brothers racked up time with some of the countries biggest names in pizza including Pizza Express, ASK & Zizzi. They took what they learnt working at these big chains & put their own spin on Sourced by doing what they do best: focussing on the quality & provenance of their ingredients & prioritising a good time for all.

There is always a seasonal vegan pizza option or you can build your own – we always add the Shropshire Shrooms.

CSONS at The Green Cafe, Ludlow (11 miles / 25 minutes)…

CSONS at The Green Cafe is a friendly cafe-restaurant situated on the banks of the River Teme overlooking the weir and Dinham bridge. Ludlow castle is in the background, with the Millennium Green, a large grassy area on the side, perfect for picnics and often described as “Ludlow’s beach” – actually the ideal jumping off point for some wild swimming in ‘The Linney’.

Amongst our favourites are the Cauliflower Pakora & the Miso Tasty Burger. If you just fancy tea and a snack, try the Carrot Cake.

The Harp Inn, Radnor (15.6 miles / 27 minutes)…

The Harp is a lovely old Welsh longhouse inn, perched on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful Radnor Valley, close to the Powys/Herefordshire border. Family owned & run, The Harp is a real pub, with ancient slate floors, oak beams, antique settles & a huge open log fire. Their cosy bar offers cask-conditioned real ales, local cider & a wide range of good wines & soft drinks. The menu only has one vegan dish, but The Harp is worth the visit.

Leaven Sourdough Pizza, Hereford (16.5 miles / 33 minutes)…

Leaven serves the best sourdough pizza we have tasted in this country, & I’ll go as far as to say it gives Naples a run for its money – it’s as least as good!

Dough is made fresh on site everyday – pick the vegan cheese & build your own pizza. We really like the Truffle Fries (without Parmesan) & the Focaccia; there’s a Rigatoni Caponata too.
